Top reviews from other countries. The film stars Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman as young insurance corporation employees who discover that their boss, Bernie, is dead.

While attempting to convince people that Bernie is still alive, they discover that Bernie had ordered their deaths to cover up his embezzlement.

Simple 80s comedy with a simple concept it won't stay with you forever and is easily forgettable but it will give you a few minutes of laughter and will remind you of a more simple time.

The guy who plays Bernie does a fantastic job of playing dead for three quarters of the film and I have always wondered how much they had to reshoot because he moved or blinked.

I remember seeing TV spots for this movie in Florida in and thinking that it made for a great concept. When I eventually rented the VHS tape a few months later it really appealed to my dark sense of humor and I ended up watching it a zillion times.

In the 25 years since its release it has become very dated. Their attempt to impress their boss Bernie Lomax a lovably smug Terry Kiser with their find leads to an invitation to his Hampton Island home for a summer weekend of babes, booze, and boats.

The duo don't realize that they've stumbled on Bernie's embezzlement scam and that he intends to have them quietly killed by the Mob the organized crime connections are never fully detailed or understood.

Mob Boss Vito instead arranges for Bernie to be killed, thus washing his hands of him. Upon arriving at Bernie's lavish home Richard and Larry discover that he ain't quite breathing and most definitely has ceased living.

For a variety of reasons they plot to create the illusion that Bernie is still alive, which proves to be easier done than said as his vacuous, drunken neighbors are more interested in drinking his champagne and mooching parties from him than actually being friends.

Despite the dark subject matter Weekend at Bernie's plays it safe for the most part, never pushing past its PG boundaries. The physicality of Kiser's performance is impressive as well as funny.

You really do believe he is dead and he's brilliant at keeping a straight face or a smirking one as he dies during a brief moment of pleasure while being tossed and thrown around.

You wouldn't think that playing a dead body would be hard but Kiser's comic timing and skill really pay off. The production design and flat photography are what date this film so much.

Although Ted Kotcheff had Wake in Fright and First Blood on his resume by this point he brings very little visual flair to the film and it looks very TV-ish.

The poor score by Andy Summers never seems to work with any scene I have a feeling that his friend Stewart Copeland would have done a better job and some of the soundtrack choices grate on the ears.

I assume that the sound guy forgot to switch on the mic or something. I can accept it when it comes to dubbing over several F-bombs to keep the movie family-friendly but you'll be surprised at how often the words simply do not match the lips.

Skip the sequel. Enjoy this movie for what it is, though it could have been better if it were a few shades darker. The Blu-ray looks great in 1.

The menu has the nerve to list "extras" plural but offers only a single trailer. There also appears to be many other cuts and edits to this movie on the Blu-ray to make it less raunchy that might irritate some fans.

I distinctly remember the film being more adult than this but I am used to the UK rated version not the US PG version featured on this disc. Fast delivery but I was shocked because I got message to say received and nothing in house only to find that it was placed under the mat that I had walked on luckily its not broken but I would defiantly have a word with the driver because it would easily have fit through letterbox.

Although this movie can be a bit cheesy, spoiler alert it is about two employees of a ponzi scheme boss known as Bernie whom was embezzling money from the company.

These two employees discover insurance fraud upon the company records after trying to escape to the roof to cool off from a broken down air conditioned office building.

Soon they report back to their corrupted boss and get invited to his luxurious vacation beach house unaware that he is actually in league with a crime syndicate.

Eventually the mob orders a hit on Bernie because they are afraid he will expose their ties with these illegal activities and eventually kill him.

In a plot twist of comedy, Bernie's two employees discover that he is dead and do a massive act of ventriloquism to make it appear that their boss is live and well.

Bernie's friends and two timing girlfriend the mob boss's wife or girlfriend think he is alive and well.

Eventually they find out that their boss's invitation to his house was a rouse to have them killed by the mob.

The hitman finds out that he may have failed to kill Bernie and ends up going crazy and obsessed into making sure Bernie is dead and along with targeting his two employees that may expose the ponzi scheme to the legal authorities.

Overall if you enjoy a good laugh about what would happen then I do suggest to watch this film! This is literally my favorite movie of all time.

If you grew up in the 80s and early 90s you probably remember this movie well, and for me it has been hilarious since day one. I still randomly quote the movie on a fairly regular basis: "Boats don't have brakes captain!

We should be at a real beach" and "What you're doing is illegal". Weekend at Bernie's 2 was pretty terrible, but this first one is golden.

Worth a watch just for that. Even having seen it repeatedly, some of the scenes are too funny to describe. Kiser as Lomax is absolutely brilliant.

His ever-so-subtle expression changes contribute greatly to the humor, and what a role to play! Just watched this movie for the first time ever Just goes to prove that fashion slaves look more ridiculous as time goes by.

It was probably a 5 Star movie in its day, but still rates a solid 4starstoday. One of my all time favorite comedy classics.

Love watching it while at the shore. They just don't make movies like these anymore! Wacky and Funny and almost plotless.

Easy to watch when you just want a film that lets you unwind after a tough day. Sit back with your favorite beverage, put your feet up they gotta hurt and watch the slapstick style flick.
