Koch sees how badly this is needed in his very first class. Everything that the boys know about England is common prejudices handed down from one generation to the next.
In order to stir up some enthusiasm for the foreign language, Oxford graduate Koch resorts to unusual means and introduces his students to a curious sport that comes from Britain: football.
Unfortunately, Koch's unconventional ways soon make him many enemies: influential parents, local dignitaries and, above all, his colleagues, who only believe in Prussian drills and discipline.
They all want to get rid of Koch at any price. But then his students take the initiative Written by Anonymous. The beginning of the football in Germany in the 's.
It's a good movie, but Some cuts make me remember the Dead Poets Society movie. Daniel Brühl is awesome in this movie. He plays absolutely right.
The end of the movie give us some great information about football in Germany. I watch this movie on Internet TV Website. This is filmed as an American movie and not the German-style one.
That's probably why many people like this movie. Looking for some great streaming picks? Check out some of the IMDb editors' favorites movies and shows to round out your Watchlist.

Director: Sebastian Grobler. Writers: Sebastian Grobler story , Raoul B. Added to Watchlist. Stars of the s, Then and Now. Torben Retboll gives an excellent review of this film detailing the ways it departs from the historical Konrad Koch.
I give it a lower star rating than Torben only because I attach a great importance to the question of historical accuracy.
Given the simple fact that the average person is likely to encounter history through a feature film like this rather than through books or documentary film it behoves the makers of such feature films not to play too fast and loose with the facts.
A feature film aims to entertain and I would certainly give the film at least 4 stars for its entertainment value.
It has high production values and good acting but the script is perhaps a little ponderous, derivative and predictable. History doesn't recreate the past.
It creates versions of the past as historians struggle with their sources and as times change so do historical interpretations. Each generation writes its own history.
From this perspective the film offers itself as a primary source for the way present day Germans view the Kaiserreich Hindsight knowledge of the and disasters to which these hubristic post Unification years eventually though not inevitably lead pervades this film.
After losing 2 World Wars and rejecting the militaristic values of a Prussianised Germany, Germans finally achieved 'world domination' on the football field by embracing and mastering not only the game of football but also the 'liberal values' embodied by the Koch inaccurately portrayed in this film.
The film script pokes fun at the 'bloody German obedience' which pervaded the Germany of that era and shows a bunch of lads rebelling against parental and school authority in pursuit of the 'beautiful game' and 'fairplay'.
They even, unrealistically, mock an injured soldier from the recent war. A portrait of Kaiser William I, the embodiment of Prussian military values, twice smashes down from the wall.
The scion of a wealthy family converts from an unpleasant social snob and bully, moulded in the image of his conservative father, to becoming a decent chap who feels free to pursue his romantic attraction to a servant girl.
Such is the liberating social effect of football! I suppose including a Jew and Pole in the social mix of the class would have been pushing things a bit too far.
The fact that football can bring social classes together is a valid one and it has certainly done a similar job in combatting racism in our own times.
The film shows the deep social divisions of the time and I suppose entertainment requires an element of caricature but the transformative powers of football as a social panacea are probably pushed too far.
This produces a nice story but life is not so simple. In fact there is nothing intrinsically 'liberal' about playing football and the game flourished under dictatorships on every continent during the last century.
The film is disingenuous in associating the game with a supposedly superior British 'liberalism' of Britain's own 'non-militaristic' brand of militarism was still carving out the world's largest empire in while Bismarck's 'State Socialism' would soon shine a welfare beacon for the tardy British.
At the end the film informs us that Bavaria banned this 'English sickness' game from its schools until So today's Germans have every right to poke fun at the social conservatism of the Kaiserreich but, if pushed too far, this can descend into poor history and anachronistic caricature.
In , the same year as the film is set, Dresden crowds went to see British workmen of the Dresden English Football Club play football in the local park.
With what became the largest Socialist party in Europe, Germany was not a stagnant conservative backwater. There were progressive, modernising forces in the Germany of that time.
Koch was not one of them. If the DDR, USSR or Nazi Germany had produced a similar film altering historical fact in order to support the prevailing ethos of their social order we would, no doubt, be outraged.
That liberal market capitalist societies feel free to play fast and loose with history in pursuit of entertainment and profit does raise an important philosophical question of whether there is a 'Market Totalitarianism' with its own rules for engulfing and controlling the consumer.
Viewer beware! One person found this helpful. I managed to watch this film courtesy of Lufthansa on a flight from Singapore to Europe in June For someone interested in the development of the 'beautiful game' this is a must-see.
Understanding that this is a dramatisation, there is plenty to entertain and to inform. Konrad Koch was the pioneer in the film who apparently experienced resistance to his idea to bring soccer to the boys in Brunswick during the mids.
Perhaps just as interesting is the portrayal of the German approach to exercise and physical activity.
Some of the best light moments take place in the gymnasium. First with the efforts of the traditionalist teacher to strengthen his students on the rings.
Second with the attempts of the boys to try out soccer skills. They clearly come to enjoy the football more than the rings! The only problem for me in purchasing the disk was that there were no English subtitles - my German is not that good!
Lufthansa provided an in-flight version which thankfully included the subtitles. I believe many English speakers would appreciate this film and having subtitles would almost certainly guarantee a wider viewership.
Highly recommended for academics who enjoy sports history and those lecturers who like to use videos to inform their students in a visual way.
When an English dubbed or subtitled version appears I will happily make a further purchase. We had already seen this film during a course in German and bought it to follow up on the language - so it met our expectations.
Report abuse. This version doesn't have subtitles though. A really inspirational film, brilliant. This version doesn't have subtitles though, so you need to have a good level of German or get the version with subtitles.
